Technical Tips & Tricks Series: EEG Test Preparation

Whether a patient is scheduled for a routine EEG or a long-term video EEG, proper test preparation before the procedure can dramatically improve the quality of the recording. The data collected during an EEG is only as reliable as the electrode application—and with so many variables affecting signal quality, attention to test prep is essential.
Start With Clean Hair and Proper Scalp Prep
One of the most important steps in EEG test preparation is ensuring the patient arrives with clean hair washed on the day of the procedure. Hair should be free of gels, oils, conditioners, sprays, or styling products. These substances interfere with electrode adhesion and increase impedance, making accurate lead placement more difficult.
Impedance matters. Starting with a clean scalp surface allows for better contact, improved signal quality, and a smoother setup process for the technologist.
Prepare Patients for Long-Term EEG Studies
For patients scheduled for extended or long-term video EEG monitoring, advance instruction is critical. Patients should be informed ahead of time that they will not be able to bathe or shower during the recording period. Discovering this after arrival can create frustration and unnecessary stress.
Clothing choice is also important. Encouraging patients to wear a button-down or zip-up shirt allows them to change clothing more easily during the study. This is especially helpful since some long-term EEG recordings may last several days, and comfort plays a major role in patient cooperation.
Optimize Preparation for Routine EEGs
For routine EEGs performed in the lab, having patients arrive ready for a nap can significantly improve the study. Capturing both awake and sleep states provides a more complete EEG snapshot, as certain abnormalities are more likely to appear during sleep.
Limiting caffeine intake prior to the test can also help facilitate sleep during the recording and improve overall data quality.
Reduce Anxiety Through Patient Education
Because patients are encouraged to relax during EEG testing, understanding the procedure ahead of time can make a meaningful difference. Providing educational materials—such as short videos or photos on your lab’s website—can help patients know what to expect and reduce anxiety on the day of the exam.
Clear communication before the appointment supports cooperation, comfort, and ultimately a better recording.
Why EEG Test Preparation Matters
Helping patients prepare properly for their EEG:
Improves electrode placement and signal quality
Reduces artifact and technical challenges
Lowers the likelihood of repeat testing
Creates a smoother experience for both patient and technologist
A well-prepared patient sets the study up for success from the very beginning.
Let’s be sure every EEG test starts on the right foot.
